New batch of streets to be paved with state grant money

By Frank Phillips Dialogue Media A new batch of Brazil city streets are scheduled to be resurfaced thanks to a grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation. The grant was formally accepted by the Brazil, Indiana, Board of Public Works and Safety on Wednesday. The grant totals $324,936.97 and will be used to pave the following streets: *Washington Street from Jackson Street to U.S. 40 *Bonnie Geyne Miller Drive from Nabuca Drive to King Street *State Street from Depot Street to Meridian Street *Colfax Strteet from State Street to Logan Street *Luther Street from Jackson Street to U.S. 40 *Harrison Street from U.S. 40 to Jackson Street *White Tail Court from Deer Creek Drive to White Tail Court/dead end *Deer Park Drive from White Tail Court to Central Avenue *Beaver Dam Court from Central Avenue to Dead End *Park Place from Pinckley to Dead End *Luther Street from Jackson Street to Knight Street *Myers Street from Hoosier Street to Leavitt Street *Myers Street from Leavitt Street to Chicago Street The city's match to get the grant will be $108,312.32. Another grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs will give the city about $250,000 of which $144,000 will fund food and personal hygiene items this summer in giveaways at First Christian Church. The rest of the money will go to the non-profit CARS organization for various expenses. The board signed a contract for design services to build a 900 square-foot building at the city's wastewater treatment plant to house two tanks containing "somewhat noxious chemicals," said Mayor Brian Wyndham. The building is mandated by the State of Indiana Department of Emergency Management to protect rivers and creeks, said city attorney Traci Orman. The City learned a few years ago this was going to be a state mandate, the mayor said. Construction is to begin by April 1, 2022. Finally, new curb cuts are coming downtown. JOINK received permission to make curb cuts on U.S. 40 by Riddell National Bank's main branch and by the Alabama Bar and Grill for broadband internet. Duke Energy received permission to make a curb cut on Church Street. The next meeting of the Brazil Board of Public Works will be at 10 a.m., May 26th at City Hall.
