Terri Schaivo is in the news this day. She is the woman in Florida who suffered a heart attack 15 years ago and who, doctors say, is in a vegetative state.
While I only wish the best for her and her family, I am opposed to Congress convening in emergency session to pass a bill aimed at this very specific situation.
Obviously, I am not alone. An ABC News poll says about 2/3 of the American population oppose what Congress and the President did.
It was so bizarre to turn on the TV this morning and find two stories presented adjacent to one another. One was the Schaivo case and the other was the latest death toll in Iraq. The story said that even though the American death toll continues to rise, as many as eight to 10 times as many Iraqis have died during our occupation, for an occupation is what we are doing there.
If we are going to intervene in families who cannot agree on medical treatment of a woman who cannot decide for herself, can government-ordered euthanasia or medical experiments to create a master race be far behind?
While the President opposes stem cell research, who is to say what lengths the next President and the next Congress will go to? Congress has set a precedent and we know not where it will lead.
